Advantages of Using Wind Power

23 November 2009 244 views One Comment

WindIt’s all around us. Everywhere we go, there is always wind. It is created through temperature differences between day and night and even through cloud coverage. In some places this wind can be quite strong while in other places it may not even be noticeable. However, it is there and always will be so why not use it to power your home; or even small portions of your home.

Ok, so you may not get enough wind around your home because you just cannot feel it. Do not worry though; it does not take a lot of wind to turn a solar turbine depending upon the size of the blades. The longer the blades, the more surface area that they have which means that the turbine will turn.

The biggest issue with wind power is not the lacking of wind, but of having too much turbulence. In traditional wind power turbines, turbulent winds can drastically reduce the amount of energy that the system is able to produce. This is why these turbines usually sit upon a high mast to get them out of the turbulent winds.

Some new and interesting designs are being introduced on a regular basis that allows the wind powered systems to generate power even in turbulent down-town areas. Of course there is not just the traditional rotary wind generators available anymore as many advancements have shown that belts also produce power.

One of the biggest leaps in wind power technologies recently is known as the Wind Belt. This was designed for simple manufacturing by remote regions of third world countries and out of readily available parts. They usually consist of a piece of nylon ribbon, some coils of wire and a neodymium magnet. Instead of spinning in the wind, they flap and resonate with the wind. Unfortunately though, they do not produce enough power by themselves to do much good for a large westernized home. They can however be stacked together in order to increase the potential of the wind and electrical production.

There are many different wind powered systems which you can actually make right at home if you have the time and patience to do so. There are plans all over the net to produce traditional turbine alternators and even directions on how to make your own blades. Of course there is also other styles of turbines for which you can easily find information on and can build on your own. In most cases, you will need to build your own turbine alternator which consists of neodymium magnets and coils of wire.

The commercially available wind generators are easy to use and set up. Some of them are designed to be used on masts while others are designed to sit at the peak of your roof top. They all serve one major purpose in existence though and that is to produce reliable electricity that you can use in your home.

With the readily available winds found all over the globe, anyone can accent their home’s electrical needs simply by making use of a wind generator. Whether you live in the city or even out in the country, wind generators can very easily produce parts or all of your electrical needs. They can run well pumps and even yard light. They can run irrigation equipment for farms and even help keep the home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Wind power is an excellent source of alternative power and while many may consider these turbines to be an eyesore, many others are raving about their ability to reduce some if not all of their home’s monthly electrical costs.
